Praise is no part of it, for nothing is made worse or better by praise. ~ Marcus Aurelius ~ Putting An End To Food Cravings By: Jill Langham http://www.fitover40.com Putting An End To Food Cravings: How Missing Nutrients Can Trigger Binge Eating - And How You Can End It How many times have you had a craving, tried to suppress it and then finally gave in only to go on a binge? Well, I can tell you that it used to be a way of life for me, until a few years ago. My husband who was my trainer at that time helped me understand the theory of eating small, frequent meals. For 3 years I followed this religiously until last year when I began feeling more trusting of the process and began listening to my body. The first food that began to "talk to me" was, of all things, peanut butter. I'd been given a new eating plan and cardiovascular program where I was to eat 2 Tablespoons of peanut butter with either my first or last meal of the day. Initially I'd eat exactly 2 tablespoons with my oatmeal and protein shake every morning. As my body got used to the 2 sessions of cardio I was doing first thing in the morning before breakfast and last thing before my 7:00 p.m. meal, and the fat started coming off, I realized that I was starving, especially by the end of the day. So during my last meal, which was supposed to be just a whey protein shake, I started adding another 2 tablespoons of peanut butter. Now, if you're like me and you've read the nutritional label of the food you're binging on, you know that peanut butter has 16 grams of fat and around 180 calories! Not exactly a low calorie food! As soon as I started eating the extra calories, the wildest thing began happening; I began losing more fat, and I started looking tighter and leaner. As time went on, I began eating more and more peanut butter, close to a cup a day, and if you can believe it, my body fat plummeted. I was following the rest of the program to a tee and believe that my body was letting me know that I needed this source of good fat and was finally in a position to listen. This got me thinking about some of the other foods I'd craved in the past. Back in the eighties, I craved raisins. I could eat a pound of raisins in two days. I'd keep them in the refrigerator, which made them very chewy, tasty and easy to eat. Over the last 5 years, my blood tests revealed a severe case of Folic Acid, Vitamin B-12 and Ferritin deficiency, (which is an indicator of the lack of stored Iron in the body). Suddenly, it made a lot of sense as to why I chose to binge on raisins and why I craved them. They are a rich source of Iron and that's what my body was having difficulty storing. So, here's what I'd like you to think about: If you're following a safe, balanced eating and exercise program and you begin to crave certain foods, ask yourself if the craved food has something in it that you may actually need. Take the time to evaluate the main components of the food. Is it rich in a vitamin or mineral you may be lacking? Is it a healthy fat? Could it be that you're deficient in something and don't know it? Have you had your blood drawn lately or suggested to your doctor that you may need intra-cellular blood tests to evaluate your blood for vitamin & mineral deficiencies? Check on-line to see whom in your area does this kind of testing and do your body a favor. You might just find that you're not a weak person, but a deficient one. There's a big difference. A stretch mark is actually a scar. They occur when our skin needs to be stretched too quickly and the inner layer of the skin, the dermis, tears. Some examples might be, a sudden weight gain, pregnancy or puberty, during growth spurts, even sudden weight loss, in some cases can leave stretch marks. The normal production of the major protein that makes up the connective tissue in our skin, collagen, is disrupted. Our skin is stretched thin and loses its elasticity. At first, due to the dilation of capillaries, the stretch marks may appear pink or red-colored. While trying to heal the wounds, the production of collagen is increased in the overstretched tissue, resulting in the familiar scars. A lot is said about the prevention of stretch marks, but what can we do to remove them if they are already formed? Can we get rid of them? Or should we just learn to live with them? Let’s take a look at some of our best options: —In the early stages, when stretch marks are still pinkish, apply several moisturizing creams and oils to make them less intense while they are maturing. Massage the area daily with body oil. Olive oil is said to be the best. Vaseline also works, any cream rich in vitamin E, different types of butter, cocoa butter, coconut butter and shea butter being the best. —Micro-dermabrasion can also help. It is a skin-freshening technique that helps repair skin conditions. The micro-dermabrasion technique abrades the skin with a high-pressure flow of crystals, which stimulates the formation of new collagen and elastin. This causes the attenuated epidermis to heal more effectively, making stretch marks heal and become much less noticeable. —You can also use medicines known as retinoids, which are derived from Vitamin A. Vitamin A is known to stimulate collagen renewal underneath the skin, healing the tears gradually. —Creams containing alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) can be of some benefit also. AHAs are usually derived from fruit. They are actually fruit acids. These creams can improve your skin texture and color by increasing cell regeneration. AHAs remove the top layer of cells causing healthier ones to come to the surface. This will help improve the appearance of the stretch marks. —You can also use laser light as an expensive but effective treatment, if used during the early stages. Dermatologists use a pulsed dye laser to fade red marks. A new type of laser has been used more recently, that can fade away mature light-colored marks. This type of therapy requires multiple treatments. Also, some pain may be involved, although it's minimal. A few patients with darker skin tones have been reported to have some post-procedure pigmentary alteration, which is usually temporary. —If the stretch marks appear on your belly there is a final solution, plastic surgery. During this procedure much of the skin below the belly button is removed. Stretch marks in this area are also removed with the skin. These stretch marks treatments may, or may not be effective, according to your skin’s complexion and the extent of the damage. If you are planning to take drastic measures consult a dermatologist and be informed of the cost, effectiveness of the preferred method and side effects, if any. The Top 7 Age Defying Beauty Secrets By Eileen Hammel Now with today’s scientific breakthroughs and discoveries you can defy the signs of aging and look great at any age. Whether you want to correct years of sun damage or you want to prevent wrinkles before they start these seven age defying techniques will give you the ability to stop the aging process dead in it’s tracks, protect and repair your skin and promote younger healthier skin. Avoid Direct Sunlight – Research indicates that about 90% of skin changes that begin in your 30’s and 40’s stem directly from the cumulative effects of exposure to the sun’s UV radiation. Prolong exposure to the sun at any age can increase your risk of skin cancer. To protect your skin from sun damage , avoid prolong exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 3p.m. when UV rays are the strongest , apply a sunscreen with a SPF 30 or above on all expose skin 20 minutes before going outdoors even if it is a overcast day. UV rays can penetrate clouds and harm unprotected skin. Don’t Smoke – Smoking ages the appearance of your skin and cause premature wrinkles. The chemicals inhaled from cigarette smoke constrict tiny blood vessels in the skin, reducing the oxygen and nutrient supply to delicate facial tissues. Blood vessel constriction lasts at least an hour after a cigarette has been extinguished. Nourish Your Skin From The Inside – Drink 8 glasses of water a day. Eat a balance healthy diet. Take antioxidants and vitamins such as green tea, soy, vitamins A, B, C and E all of which are excellent for creating healthy younger skin. Be Smart About Your Skin Care Products – There truly are amazing skin care products on the market today that can defy the signs of aging, repair and protect your skin. However not all skin care products are created equally. Did you know that a vitamin C product that contains concentrations of less then 5 % is ineffective, or that a topical product that contains collagen won’t increase the collagen in your skin because it’s molecules are simply too large to penetrate the skin. To receive the full benefits of today’s technology and breakthroughs it is essential to become a smart consumer and reach the best products and the most beneficial ingredients that are available. Don’t Over Exfoliate – Exfoliation is one of the best renewal processes for your skin. It helps to shed the top layer of dead skin cells, unclog pores, makes skin more receptive to moisturizer and improves the look and feel of your skin. However dermatologists’ caution that the over use of exfoliating products can leave the skin dry, red, irritated and more vulnerable to sun damage. You should not use exfoliating products such as AHA products, micro-dermabrasion treatments or facial scrubs more then twice a week. Before Going To Bed Use An Antioxidant & Vitamin Enriched Moisturizer – Research has confirmed that our skin’s ability to absorb active ingredients from skin care products is greatest at night. This makes bed time the best time to topical nourish your skin with antioxidants and vitamins. Use Cosmetics Fortified With Vitamins & Antioxidants – Cosmetics formulated with vitamins and antioxidants have been found to have therapeutic benefits for your skin and to aid in the promotion healthier skin.
