“An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.”

~ Bill Vaughn ~

A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one Year and out the other.

~ Unknown ~

“Another fresh new year is here . . .
Another year to live!
To banish worry, doubt, and fear,
To love and laugh and give!

This bright new year is given me
To live each day with zest . . .
To daily grow and try to be
My highest and my best!

I have the opportunity
Once more to right some wrongs,
To pray for peace, to plant a tree,
And sing more joyful songs!”

~ William Arthur Ward ~

Treat Yourself to a Luxurious Home Spa - Less Money, More Often!
© Copyright 2006

A day at the spa - what a welcome release! However, most individuals just dream about the soothing music and luxurious spa treatments because they don't have the time or money to indulge. That doesn't have to be the case, a bit of pampering from time to time goes a long way to making you feel good about yourself and ready to take on the day.

If you are at your wits end with work, the kids, the house or just the hectic pace of life you can create your own mini home spa tonight and re-create it as often as you need to. In fact, having the ability to turn your bathroom into a spa for even half an hour before you hit the sack will not only relax you but can become a weekly indulgence without the cost or the time involved in day spas.

GET READY, GET SET...

To really feel like you've been transported to a luxury spa it's worth it to set the stage properly. Here are the six steps to creating a mini home spa and how to enjoy it.

First, get rid of the toys! Or any other clutter in the tub. Dump them in a bin and set them outside the bathroom door if you have to, but don't try this with rubber frogs and superhero washcloths lying around.

Second, have a big towel ready. Have several on hand if you're trying any body wrap that you will need to wash off later.

Third, it's worth the little extra to invest in a plush, comfy bathrobe and slippers. It's a one time expense to really feel like you've gone to a spa.

Fourth, candles and a CD. Find something tranquil that suits the mood you're going for. Are you looking for rejuvenation or relaxation? Aromatherapy candles in scents like lavender for relaxation or citrus for rejuvenation will intensify the effects of your other treatments.

Fifth, face mask, exfoliation tool or scrub, Epsom salts and essential oils. Whether you prefer to create your own products from kitchen ingredients on hand, like bananas, honey, cucumber or chocolate; or if you purchase a few samples from the drug store, create a theme with your selections. A lavender oil in your bath with a rich, moisturizing chocolate or mud mask will feel extra indulgent. A peppermint bath with a cucumber mask will refresh you like nothing else.

Sixth, time. Put aside at least 20 minutes to enjoy your mini home spa. Fill the bath with hot water, turning on the shower for additional steam, and place a few teaspoons of Epsom salts along with several drops of your essential oil. Light the candles and turn on the music. Wash your face with a warm face cloth and apply the mask liberally. Unrobe and slip into your bath; start with your exfoliating scrub or pumice and then let yourself relax and enjoy all the sensations; smell, feel, sound.

When you're done, wash off the mask and moisturize from head to toe. Complete the experience by wrapping yourself in the soft robe and enjoying a cup of herbal tea selected to compliment your spa experience. Choose peppermint or citrus tea for a rejuvenating spa or a jasmine or chamomile tea for a relaxing spa.

Creating a home spa is so easy and affordable you'll have no excuse not to indulge as often as you wish!

No Calories! Indulge with Dessert-Rich Skin Care Products

Does a wafting of vanilla make you weak in the knees? Does the mention of chocolate raise your blood temperature? Do you salivate for banana cream pies and sugary sweet treats? Don't worry about the diet - you CAN indulge recklessly when you use these delicious ingredients for the beauty of your skin!

Unfortunately, giving in to your craving for sugary treats too often will not give you the lift you're looking for, but learning how these sinful ingredients can improve the quality and tone of your skin means you can have dessert anytime you want - guilt free.

What can these delightful ingredients do for your skin? Use this guide and create your own home made moisturizers, scrubs and face masks, or look for these ingredients in store bought preparations.

SUGAR

Sugar makes an effective and sweet body scrub. Brown sugar mixed with a small amount of liquid glycerin or massage oil can be used all over the body. Apply the mixture using small, circular motions to rub it on. The sugar grains will gently remove dry, dead skin while the glycerin or massage oil will ease the application and keep skin soft and supple.

You can intensify the sweetness of your body scrub by adding a few drops of essential oils, like vanilla, for a luxurious and relaxing indulgence.

HONEY

Honey is a natural anti-bacterial agent. You can add a small amount of liquid soap or glycerin to a few tablespoons of honey for a gentle cleanser that kills bacteria and helps heal scarring. This is great for sensitive skin that's prone to breakouts.

Honey also makes an excellent base for a mask and can be used with all of these other ingredients to provide healing and cleansing properties to the formulations. A simple honey and oat cleanser (using fine ground or powdered oats) will both exfoliate and moisturize your skin.

CHOCOLATE

Chocolate in it's sugary form may not be great for you but real, dark cocoa is an excellent source of antioxidants that fight free radicals which can cause cancer. The caffeine in chocolate is also useful in de-toxifying skin and has been used to fight cellulite as well as purify skin.

Cocoa butter is a fantastic moisturizer and by adding a few drops of vanilla and cherry essential oils you can safely indulge while the aromatherapy effects can actually curb your cravings!

VANILLA

Vanilla is one of the most popular scents for bathing products. It's wonderfully rich aroma is relaxing while also being studied for it's ability to curb cravings for sweets.

Vanilla blends well with most other scents including the sweet offerings listed here as well as other popular scents such as lavender and rose. Adding the essential oils of vanilla to your bath, a moisturizer or scrub will intensify the aromatherapy effects and leave you feeling restful and happy.

BANANA

Bananas are naturally rich in vitamins, potassium and other skin-pleasing nutrients. Nothing could be simpler (or cheaper) than mashing a banana and applying as a mask for soft, smooth skin. Choose a banana that's ripened and soft (but not with black spots).

Adding plain yogurt and honey will soothe sunburned skin and kill germs. If you are allergic to bananas you should apply a test patch on your skin before applying to the entire face.

So go ransack the cupboards - binge all evening - these delicious beauty treatments will have you feeling cleansed and soothed like no banana split or chocolate layer cake ever could!

New Year’s Resolutions- 4 Steps to Success
By Meri Raffetto

For many of us who want to start living a healthier lifestyle, the hardest part is getting started. We often set our New Year’s Resolution only to forget it a few weeks later. The first and most important step to succeeding at your new resolution is setting attainable goals. Here are four steps to create goals to help you make your New Year’s Resolutions a reality.

1.  Measurable Goals

One of the reasons people tend to lose interest in their New Year’s resolution is because they are too vague. Many people vow this is the year they will get in shape, lose weight, or improve their health. These goals are great but there is no way to evaluate the specifics. Instead you could make a resolution to lose weight by walking 3 days a week, and cutting down your portion sizes. This creates a clear picture of how you are going to achieve your new resolution and helps you to take action.

2.  Practical Goals

When creating a goal they must be practical which will depend entirely on your lifestyle. For example, if your day is scheduled around traveling from place to place and you typically depend on fast food, then setting a goal of bringing a lunch may not be practical. Instead you can make a goal to have a deli sandwich and salad instead of fast food 3 days a week.

3.  Accept setbacks

Setbacks are a necessary part of the learning experience. Setting goals generally means changing habits which takes a bit of a learning curve. Setbacks are a natural part of the process and they don’t mean that you have no will power or have failed. It means you are learning- accept them and move on!

4.  Pamper Yourself

Learn how to reward your positive efforts in a healthy way. Enjoy a massage, pedicure, afternoon matinee or hot bath. It’s up to you but make sure to reward yourself to keep up a positive momentum. Rewarding yourself without food also helps to lessen the urge to eat for emotional reasons. Be nice to yourself! It goes a long way in reaching your goals and improves your well-being.
